Free Medications are Available to Low Income Families
It’s a very sad fact that many children are currently being treated for a number of serious conditions without having access to the prescription drugs they need. In fact, many kids are terminal condition and doctors are often left with no option other than prescribe medications that are far beyond the financial range of the parents. Low income families that are uninsured and have no real benefits are faced with this terrible situation on a regular basis and many drug companies are stepping up in an effort to do something about it.
How Patient Assistance Programs Can Help
There are a wide range of organizations and health-care groups that strive to see that low-income families never have to go without the necessary medications. For families with no prescription coverage through their insurance—or have no insurance at all—these groups can often help in acquiring low-cost and even free prescription medications.
Programs like these, often referred to as Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs), are most often offered through pharmaceutical companies. While the eligibility requirements can often be strict, there are a few of these programs that provide assistance to families that make as much as $40,000 annually. More typically, however, an applicant’s income must be less than twice the nations’ poverty level ($10,400 annually for one person) or a combined income of $22,000 for a family of four or more. These programs and companies helps these families with paperwork and eligibility requirements.
Most of these programs offer roughly 1,800 medications, including some of the most common and frequently prescribed drugs. They do not, however, provide drugs that can cause a patient to develop and addiction, dependence or can be easily abused.
