Applying For Medicaid?
Every state has it’s own Medicaid program and you will need to apply for the specific program offered in your state. Typically you will be able to complete and submit the application at your local Medicaid office. In addition, each state has a toll free number that will answer any questions you may have about applying for Medicaid.
If you need the exact location and phone number for the local Medicaid office in your area you can visit the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) website http://www.cms.hhs.gov/home/medicaid.asp. They will provide the Medicaid information you need. Many states have simplified the application process considerably, and allow you to apply on-line as well as over the phone. The local Medicaid office is responsible for processing Medicaid applications and they are responsible for answering any questions you might have about the particular state program.
When you are ready to apply for Medicaid you will need to have the following information:
* Proof of age such as a birth certificate
* Proof of where you live such as a lease or utility bills
* Recent Pay Stubs
* Proof of your income such as pay stubs, letter from Social Security
* Bank Books
* Insurance policies
* Your medical bills
Applying for Medicaid is not that difficult but it will require that you adhere to your state’s requirements. Although processing a Medicaid application can take time, state Medicaid agencies are required by Federal law to reach a decision on an applicant’s eligibility within 45 days of the application date. If the application is based on a disability, the state has up to 90 days to notify the applicant. One of the most common reasons for the denial of Medicaid benefits has to do with incomplete applications. Make sure all the required documentation is submitted and that the application is properly completed.
