The use of fiber in our diets is essential. Fiber aids in digestion and it helps to keep your colon and other organs healthy and functioning properly.
A Fiber Rich Diet Diabetes is a key component to ensuring that diabetics maintain a healthy lifestyle. Fiber should be a large part of any diabetic’s diet. Fiber is essnetial for our overall health.
It is recommended that diabetics maintain a healthy body weight. Their body mass index (BMI) should be 25 or less.
Eating foods that contain fiber will help diabetics to maintain their blood glucose under control.
Fiber can also help by keeping you feeling fuller longer. What it does is, it slows the conversion of carbohydrates in your body. This can can keep your blood sugars stable. A high fiber diet can also reduce your cholesterol
The type of fiber that a diabetic needs to eat to is soluble fiber. This is fiber that dissolves in water. Some great sources of soluble fiber are:
* Eat more whole grain or whole wheat products instead of white processed flour and breads.
* Eat fresh fruits and raw vegetables instead of eating them cooked. Natural fruits are so much healther than the fruits you drink in juice form. Raw fruits and vegetables should be eaten regularly as part of a healthy diet. In fact 4 servings of vegetables a day is recommended.
* Eat beans in your diet as much as possible. beans are a great high- fiber food
In addition to adding the above foods you should also drink a lot of water. Doctors typically recommend that you are drink at least eight glasses of water a day. This is very important because the fiber dissolves in water and you need to stay hydrated in order for it to work properly.
Another great benefit about eating foods that are rich in fiber is that you can probably increase your servings of the foods you like. If you are on a carbohydrate counting diet and you are using 15 grams of carbohydrates for as the norm for each meal, you will be able to increase the amount of carbohydrates you are eating if that food has a high-fiber content.
In fact here is a rule of thumb that you can use. You can subtract the number of grams of fiber in a serving from the number of carbohydrates. For instance if you are eating a food that has 20 grams of carbohydrates, but it also has five grams of fiber then you can subtract the five grams of fiber from the twenty carbohydrate and it will be reduced to a 15 gram serving fiber rich diet diabetes. This is a good deal.
Eating high fiber foods will keep you healthy and can also help you lose weight.
You should always consult with your doctor before starting any diet or taking any medication.
