How can I find help for my lung cancer Treatment?
Lung Cancer Treatment progress is a slow but steady process. That is exactly how you can describe the scientific research being done in the area of lung cancer. The researchers that are involved in finding new methods for effectively treating lung cancer are making progress.
Although the results may appear to be slow in coming, to the people who have been diagnosed with lung cancer the innovations are encouraging. They now have more hope for complete a complete recovery than they would have had at anytime in our history.
There are many choices that are currently available depending upon the certain aspects and factors of the cancer itself. These factors are:
• The type, the size as well as the location of the cancerous tumor
• The results of any lab tests that have been performed
• The stage for which the disease has progressed
• The patients individual health status and their age
• The patients personal needs or preferences
The patient’s lung cancer treatment can be either a local or a systemic occurrence. The local treatments are of such a nature that they will remove, possibly destroy or at least control the active cancer cells in the patient’s lungs. Surgery as well as radiation is considered to be local treatments.
Systemic treatments on the other hand tend to destroy or control the cancer cells throughout the patient’s complete body. A sample of this type of treatment is chemotherapy.
When determining the treatment for lung cancer the doctor must base his recommendations upon the type of cancer the patient is experiencing as well as the stage of development of the cancer. According to his diagnosis you will find that the different types of cancer treatments are performed with various goals clearly in mind.
It is possible for there to be only one type of lung cancer treatment recommended or the doctor may prescribe a combination of different forms of treatments. I have enclosed a short list of the various treatment methods currently used to fight cancer.
Surgery is the most used method available today. The major goal of performing surgery is to effectively remove the offending tumor from the lung while leaving the majority of the lung intact. Occasionally the unfortunate patient will discover that the complete lung must be removed.
Next in line we have radiation therapy. This method of treatment is meant to kill the cancer cells by use of X-rays. The doctor may even prescribe this treatment as a pre-treatment before surgery or perhaps it may be used solo or even with chemotherapy.
Now we come to the chemotherapy itself. With chemotherapy treatment the goal is to destroy the cancer cell while preventing its return. Chemotherapy may be used in conjunction with other popular treatments as well.
The last treatment method that we will cover here is targeted therapy. This is a kind of drug therapy that targets certain molecules of the cell which causes the cancerous, growth. It too can be used with other treatment methods as well.
