How Important is Diet for Diabetes?

Most people who are diabetic quickly realize how important diet is to keep their disease under control.

The key is not so much that there is a diet for diabetes which requires special foods but rather  the focus is about controlling the amount of carbohydrates consumed on a daily basis. This must be carefully monitored.

Carbohydrates have the greatest effect on the blood-sugar level. More so then fats or proteins. However, it’s important to note that people who have diabetes must also pay attention to their fat consumption as well as their protein intake.

In order to adequately maintain your proper blood sugar level you  need to make extremely healthy meal selections, obtain sufficient exercise on a regular basis and ensure that your medications are taken as directed by your physician. In some instances a dietitian can help you by providing a nutrition training session in order to customize a diet for diabetes.

As a diabetes patient certain foods  should always be avoided and discretion should also be used when drinking alcoholic beverages. The problem stems from the fact that alcohol tends to be processed within the body in a similar manner as fat would be and alcohol tends to provide as many calories as you would find in the fat. In the event that you decide to drink alcohol you should do so only in very rare occasions and then only if your blood sugar level is completely controlled. You should always consult with your doctor to be sure drinking is acceptable for your specific condition.

Meals which are low on the glycemic index often have less of an  impact on your blood sugar levels. People that regularly eat a low amount of glycemic foods tend to have a much lower body fat amount then others. The higher the glycemic index then the higher ones blood sugar level is likely to be. A serious discussion with your doctor or a registered dietitian concerning the glycemic index may perhaps help to better control your blood sugar level. A suitable diet for diabetes will always take the glycemic index into account.

If you have been diagnosed with a case of diabetes then it is extremely important that you eat properly every day in order to adequately control your blood sugar level. Here are a few simple tips:

•    Eat a variety of foods to include plenty of fruit, vegetables and meat. Nuts, dairy and grains can provide you with a good supply of protein.
•    Eat the proper amount of calories to maintain your optimum weight.
•    Select  foods which are high in fiber. You should eat 35 grams of fiber daily.
