Propecia Side Effects?

What are the propecia side effects? Well Propecia is currently the only FDA-approved prescription drug for hair replacement. Propecia has been used as a hair loss treatment since the 1990’s and it has proven to be quite effective. Although it usually takes up to three months before you see any positive effects.

Propecia is taken orally. Because there is a link between high levels of male hormones and hair loss in men, the drug reduces the amount of testosterone produced in the skin. Propecia is used mainly by men. It has been found to produce negative side effects in women who are pregnant. This can be extremely stressful for any man and their partner to have to go through.

Some men have reported that one of the common side effects of using Propecia is the loss of libido (interest in sex) and erection problems.  Some men have reported a loss of sex drive and the ability to maintain a string erection.

Usually their aren’t many side effects associated with propecia. In a few cases some men have reported back pain, loss of libido, and impotence  along with scrotum pain and swelling of the face. These side effects are usually temporary and don’t re-occur when the treatment is stopped. It is important to note that Propecia (unlike Rogaine) is not designed for women. Pregnant women run the risk of causing birth defects to their fetuses if this medication is taken.

Men who are taking Propecia and want to take a test to verify whether they may have prostate cancer should inform their doctors beforehand as it can impact the results.

One reason why Propecia has been very successful is that it has reacted pro-actively to market demands.  Merck is the parent company of Propecia.  They have recently retired their patent on Propecia. Because of this the generic version of propecia, Finasteride, has been dropping rapidly in price. Patients are paying considerably less. Instead of paying about $400 for a three month supply of Propecia, they now can now pay less than $100.

Propecia is an effective form of hair loss restoration and has been very successful in clinical studies. If you are experiencing hair loss you should talk to your doctor to see if Propecia is right for you. Most men still want a full head of hair if they can have it.

You should always consult with your doctor before taking any prescription medication or beginning any medical treatment.
