What is the Eligibility for Medicaid?

As you may already know, the Medicaid program is a state and federally funded benefit that provides payment for certain medical related services.

The program will pay for costs associated with doctor or health care provider visits
. Medicaid will pay for both inpatient as well as outpatient expenses. In addition, expenses for prescription medications are also covered by Medicaid. In many instances mental health care coverage is covered as well. Unlike private insurance, Medicaid will pay for transportation expenses that are incurred for medical appointments. Medicaid also covers nursing home expenses.

People of all ages can qualify for Medicaid because the only really strict requirement is the income of the patient. There is a broader range of medical services provided with Medicaid than there is with the Medicare package.

Medicare will cover people over age 65 regardless of their income. The major benefits associated with Medicare are the visits to the doctors’ office and the hospitalization costs. You will find that with Medicare the home health or nursing home coverage is extremely limited in nature.

As you can see the medical coverage for Medicaid patients is very extensive and as such it tends to be a bit harder and more difficult to qualify for. Recipients of Supplemental Security Income and AFDC are automatically covered under Medicaid. Individuals who may be receiving Old Age Pension are covered under the Old Age Pension Health & Medical Fund. It is not unusual for individuals to apply for Medicaid when they or a member of their family needs intensive nursing care.

To successfully complete the application process for Medicaid you will need to meet personally with a counselor for an evaluation. The following documentation is required for your meeting:

You should haveĀ  your social security card available, your latest checking or savings account statement, a copy of your most current rent receipt, any vehicle registrations, your life insurance policies, any proof of income such as pay stubs, retirement statements, etc, some proof of age such as a birth certificate which could also serve as proof of citizenship, and finally some form of proof indicating your residence. If you are married you will need to submit the same information for your spouse as well.

Eligibility for Medicaid varies according to the State you live in. This is why it’s important that you contact your local social services center to obtain the most current and up to date information possible.
